I had never heard of this group before, but after reading all the positive reviews for this album I was intrigued enough to order it from Amazon. That turned out to one of those pleasantly great picks. This album is a gem!I'm no authority on British folk music, but I do like groups like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Trees are in the same league, fusing traditional folk tunes with more contemporary rock sounds. Like those other bands, they have the obligatory female vocalist, and Celia Humphris is a very good one indeed, bordering on extraordinary during those times her vocals gymnastically leap and dive from one octave to the next. Wow, what range! The other factor going for this band are the three guitar players. When they break free of the folk constraints, these guys can really wail. Folk sounds merge with slight psychedelic rock flourishes and the results are brilliant. The CD comes with a 16-page booklet with well-written liner notes by one of the band's guitarist's, David Costa. He prefaces one passage, saying "Forty years invariably blurs a great deal of detail", but his recollection of the band's history seems undiminished, packed with informative and entertaining tales. In addition to the history of the group and these recordings, he mentions that Gnarls Barkley sampled a song from their second album "On The Shore."Fans of this era of British folk-rock (this album was recorded in 1970) should find a lot to like on this album. An underrated jewel!
